A Fairy Tale About a Wee Fish Named Rybitinka is clever modern poetic story about a tiny fish of no importance, who is the only creature able to save the whole Giant Sea, in which a very strange disease is being spread… small fish are being gulped down by bigger ones, the bigger fish by even bigger ones and, in the end there is no single fish left in the Giant sea, with exception of a big Sperm Whale condemned to the doom as she gulped down the whole sea with all the fish… Beautiful, metaphoric tale of tolerance and haughty attitude is full of quaint fishes, colors and movements. The author, Petr Nikl, a recognized painter and performer in the Czech Republic, understands the world of children. His exhibitions are visited by children with anxiety. If Petr Nikl´s story is not accomplishment enough, his accompanying illustrations – color mezzotints – are equally excellent. The process employed is technically demanding, and involves intaglioes which are gradually printed from one zinc plate. The literary and visual components sensitively amplify each other and create a perfect unity – Petr Nikl has also done the graphic design of the book, and shows an exceptional sense for main book elements. This tale is his very first book and had outstanding reviews in the Czech Republic.
